Thomas (“Tom”) is a Managing Director at 1919 Investment Counsel. In his role as an Equity Research Analyst, Tom covers the Information Technology sector, including semiconductors, communications equipment, storage, handsets, and related industries, supporting Portfolio Managers in the construction of tailored portfolios. As a Portfolio Manager, he manages the firm’s Disruptive Innovation Advisory Group, focusing on tomorrow’s leading companies, and he also co-manages the Impact Equity Strategy, focusing on growth companies making a positive impact in the world.

Outside of the office, Tom has authored over 22 technical publications in the semiconductor field related to MEMS, Solar Energy, and Compound Semiconductors. He has taught technical short courses, presented original research, and consulted in various technical fields. He is the recipient of four U.S. Patents, one for developing a novel Solar Cell processing technology and three in the field of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Additionally, Tom has been a debate judge for the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) and volunteers with Helping Up Mission in Baltimore. He has also volunteered with Gold Star Teen Adventures based in North Carolina.

Prior to joining the firm, Tom worked at a closed-end fund in New York for six years, and before that was a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working on Silicon MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS).

In his spare time, Tom enjoys golfing, hiking, traveling, and spending time with his wife, three children, three dogs, and two cats.

Tom earned his B.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), M.S. in Electrical Engineering from RPI, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. Tom is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has published 15 professional journal articles, and has been awarded four U.S. patents. Tom is also a CFA Charterholder.
